I will be resident in Finland as visiting researcher at Uniarts Helsinki and Aalto University. The focus is the ExoSound project, which is developing participatory forms of mutual sound-making outdoors.
I will be in Helsinki from 19 September to 19 October and Rovaniemi from that date until 27 October.
ExoSound abstract
The ExoSound research project investigates and develops artistic, technological and sociological prospects for participatory electronic sound arts that take place outdoors. Drawing from the mobile technologies paradigm shift, this project contributes to the development of electronic sound practices in an off-grid, outdoor context, with a specific focus on relationality, environmental coupling, and participatory agency. The project envisions future forms of sonic culture, where groups of participants join in to co-inhabit their local environment through shared sonic agency and experiential connection with the sound, each other, and the place. The project builds on a social understanding of music, technology, and lived environment; all three seen as “socio-material arrangements”, that is, as interlacings of material and social actions that affect each other. The environment is constituent of this arrangement, with its inherent ethical and eclogical imperatives. To be operable within the socio-material complex, the enquiry is designed as a cross-disciplinary project at the interface of technological development, socio-environmental situatedness and artistic experimentation, merged into a mutually supporting, comprehensive research-creation framework.
